Ganglion Cyst
Removal for Unsightly and Painful Ganglion Cysts
A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous lump that commonly forms near joints or tendons in the wrists, hands, or feet. These cysts are filled with a jelly-like fluid and can vary in size. While ganglion cysts are often painless, they can cause discomfort or limited mobility if they press on nearby nerves or interfere with joint movement.
Treatment options for ganglion cysts include:
- Observation: If the cyst isn’t causing pain or functional issues, a "wait-and-see" approach may be recommended.
- Immobilization: Wearing a wrist splint or brace can help reduce joint movement and alleviate discomfort.
- Aspiration: A needle is used to drain fluid from the cyst, providing temporary relief. However, cysts often return.
- Corticosteroid Injections: After aspiration, a corticosteroid injection can reduce inflammation and lower the chance of recurrence.
- Surgery (Ganglion Cyst Excision): When conservative treatments are ineffective or the cyst causes pain, surgery may be needed. This procedure removes the cyst and its stalk (connection to the joint or tendon). It can be done using traditional open surgery or arthroscopically with small incisions.
- Hydrodissection: A newer technique involves injecting a high-pressure saline solution into the cyst to collapse it, offering a less invasive option than traditional surgery.
After surgery, a splint or brace is typically worn for a short period to protect the area during healing. Recovery times vary, but most people can resume normal activities within a few weeks to a few months.
The best treatment for ganglion cysts depends on factors like cyst size, location, and the level of discomfort or interference with joint function.
