  • What Are the Symptoms of a Broken Hand or Wrist?

    Outside of obvious deformities, like crooked fingers or a bent wrist, look for other symptoms of fracture in your hand or wrist.


    • Significant pain that worsens when moving your fingers, hand, or wrist
    • Swelling, tenderness, and bruising at the fracture site
    • Difficulty moving your fingers or thumb
    • Stiffness or numbness in your hand or fingers

  • What Causes Hand and Wrist Fractures?

    Several events can fracture or break your hand or wrist.


    • Crushing injuries at work
    • Sports participation
    • Motor vehicle accident trauma
    • Reaching out to break a fall

    In addition, osteoporosis can weaken your bones to such an extent that seemingly minor injuries, such as bumping your hand against a table or door frame, can cause significant damage.

  • What Kinds of Fractures Require Surgical Repair?

    Let our surgeons determine the extent of your injuries and whether surgery is required. In some cases, fractures are stable or nondisplaced, which means the bones haven't shifted enough to require surgery and the injury can be treated with a cast or splint.


    In other cases, the fractures have shattered the bones into many pieces or affected the joint surfaces. These severe injuries usually require surgery to restore alignment and to insert pins that keep the bones in place while they heal.


    In an open fracture, the bone breaks through the skin and will require surgery to prevent bone infection and to promote normal functions after the wound heals.


    Skilled at treating even the most severe breaks and fractures, our surgeons can also help if you're having problems or pain due to a previous injury that did not heal properly.
